Hi guys! HTML error for your OGG link :^)

Would really like to be able to use disqus without javascript, but it kinda forces your hand…

Many thanks for the info -- appreciate you Titans of JS bringing this great behind the scenes info to the Community. (It's a great listen on the weekend while refactoring some test and app smells.)

(one note... I can hear some typing in the background, also some Twitterific? or IM bubbles occassionally in the background... kindof funny. Thought you might want the feedback)

    Mark,

I couldn't work out what that was. Next time we will be more pedantic about it though so it doesn't happen. I am sorry about that.

Let us know if there is anything you would like us to chat about / people to invite in.

btw... if you create a badge, I think some people would want to put links to the podcast lists on their blogs... i.e. would be good to spread the word about this info to as many people as possible. 2 cents.
    thanks again & cheers-

Are there any transcripts available? While I appreciate that some people prefer audio, not everybody does.
  • dalmaer · 1 year ago
I would love to get transcripts going.... but that may not happen in the short term unfortunately :(

The evolution from ActionScript 1.0 (early ecmascript) and ActionScript 3.0 (ecmascript draft 4) was a disruptive, it served those who wanted to be able develop for larger projects and be able to write better efficient maintainable and reusable code however it became too complex for designer-cut-and-paste coders. This big disruption was simply neccesary to forward the language and become/stay relevant to developers.

I wonder how yet another standard browser scripting would empower the developer. It would a big win to use proven modern insights and the best ideas from HTML, CSS, Javascript to design completely new standard languages from scratch.

One of the best discussions of language history and design I've heard.
You could expand into many episodes, using the ECMA issues as a vehicle to discuss the historical/theoritical issues brought up (ADA, Smalltalk, Lisp, etc), and their real impact on the designer and then the language user. Thank for not underestimating you audience !

Thanks Richard. I definitely don't want to dumb down anything. The audience is always smarter than you are.... and I am glad you appreciated what Brendan had to say. If you ever have ideas for episodes, please don't hesitate to let us know too!

Ejscript was a pretty advanced implementation of ES4 for non-browser use (http://www.ejscript.org). Seems they will be tracking ES-Harmony while hanging on to the ES4 features. Much like Adobe and ActionScript.

EJScript is very cool. I am glad they are following harmony too, and look forward to seeing what they come up with!

For some reason my downloads stop at ~ 5MB for this podcast. I've tried a number of different methods - anything special about hosting these files on googlecode ?
I've tried from two different machines and two different connections. Can't figure this one out. I'm located in Australia if that helps.

I agree that 2 versions of inheritance would be very confusing for the beginner programmer. Having learned Java and OO concepts at uni undergrad level I noticed that although inheritance (to me at least) was obvious, there were quite a few others in the early stages who found it really difficult. So, the cost of having 2 types of inheritance makes me think class inheritance in JavaScript is maybe not a great idea.

BTW I'm no gun JavaScripter. Thanks for the podcast guys.

Awesome post again, Dalmaer! And the podcasts is very interesting. I am really curious about what you guys concoct further. I am convinced that by your discussions you´ll find the right balance of functionality and usability.
